Privacy
This is a draft. A lawyer will check it before Amalino is released.
Amalino is made for children, so it keeps as little as possible, and keeps it on your device. Here is what that means, in plain words.
In the app
- Amalino works without an account and without the internet.
- Everything the app keeps (boards, the words your child used, recordings of family voices, and photos you add) stays on your device, encrypted.
- There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking.
- Amalino only uses the internet if you turn on an optional feature and agree first:
- "All ARASAAC pictures" and "More symbol sets (online)": pictures come from ARASAAC (arasaac.org) and Global Symbols (globalsymbols.com). Only the word list, the pictures you choose and the words you search for are exchanged; nothing about your child is sent.
- "Natural voices" and the speech recogniser for "Partner listening": the files come from GitHub (github.com), where the voice files are kept. Only the files are downloaded; nothing about your child is sent.
- "Sync and sharing" and "Cloud helpers for adults", which come later: keeping your own devices in sync (end-to-end encrypted) and AI helpers for grown-ups. Each one asks separately, and you can turn it off again.
Like any website, the sites above can see your device's internet (IP) address when it connects to them.
- "Suggest pages for the moment" can read the time, your calendar or your location. Each is a separate setting, off at the start, and the data is only used on your device. On Android, the system asks for calendar reading and writing together, but Amalino only reads events. It never adds, changes or deletes them.
- "Suggest hotspots" on a scene analyses the photo on your device. On iPhone and iPad it uses Apple's Vision framework. On Android it uses Google ML Kit: the pictures never leave the device, but ML Kit sends Google anonymous performance and usage metrics about this feature (Google's ML Kit terms; it can't be turned off). It is off until you choose it. If you turn on "Cloud helpers for adults", a smaller copy of the photo is sent to that helper first.
- "Offline translation" of button words (an AI helper, off at the start) can run on your device. On Android you can download Google's ML Kit translation model for a language once, from Google (about 30 MB, after you agree). After that, translation works offline and no words from the app are sent; ML Kit's anonymous usage metrics apply as above. On iPhone and iPad it uses the languages installed in Apple's Translate settings.
- "Export backup" makes a copy protected by a password, and you can delete everything by uninstalling the app.
What Amalino is not
Amalino helps a child communicate. It doesn't diagnose, monitor or treat any condition.
